Advanced Applications

Radiation - gamma or electron beam - can change or improve the properties of many different types of materials. It can also be used to test the life expectancy of materials and components that will be used in radiation environments, such as those in power plants, nuclear testing facilities and in the aerospace industry.
Our Advanced Radiation Processing solutions are specifically designed for:
Polymers (Resins or formed parts)
Advanced Radiation Processing can improve polymer:
  • Melt temperature
  • Chemical resistance
  • Wear resistance
  • Impact strength
  • Elongation
  • Memory effects
  • Environmental Stress Crack Resistance (ERSC)
  • Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWP)
Examples of the most commonly treated parts include:
  • UHMWPE implants (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)
  • PTFE
  • PPTC
  • Micropowders
  • Catheter tubing
  • Heat shrink
  • Pipe
  • Film
  • Electrical components
  • Automotive components
Power Semiconductors
Electron beam processing is used to improve or tailor the switching speeds, recovery times and other electrical properties of:
  • Silicon wafers
  • Diodes
  • IGBTs
  • Components within the solar energy industry
  • Components within the electric vehicle industry
Radiation Hardness
Both nuclear and aerospace industries leverage Advanced Radiation Processing to certify the life expectancy of various components used in these environments, including:
  • Satellite components
  • Wire
  • Cable
  • Pumps
  • Coatings used in power plants
Gemstones Advanced radiation processing can change the color of gemstones or make them more vibrant. Topaz, which is mined clear, turns to Swiss Blue, Sky Blue or London Blue when treated with e-beam radiation. When treated with gamma radiation, the color of quartz, tourmaline, aquamarine and emerald gemstones can similarly be enhanced.
