Pet Foods/Pet Treats
Irradiation can eliminate Salmonella and other harmful microorganisms in pet foods and pet treats making them safer for the pet and its human family.
- Although dogs do not usually become ill from Salmonella, they are not immune, and the consequences can be serious for the pet and very difficult for the pet's family.
- Pet owners, especially children, may contract Salmonella infections as a result of handling family pets, pet food and pet treats. After 35 cases of Salmonellosis sickened Canadians who handled dog treats in 1999, the FDA alerted American consumers about the risk and began enforcement action against sellers of contaminated pet treats.
