Radiation Processing
What it is Radiation processing is the use of ionizing energy in the form of electron beam or gamma ray to beneficially alter the properties of such everyday materials as polymers, cable and wire, rubber and tires, fibers and fabrics, semiconductors and gemstones.
Little publicized, but widely used While radiation processing for materials enhancement is not widely publicized, it is a safe, effective and respected process and is used across a diverse group of industries to enhance the performance of a broad array of materials and products.
A significant advance over traditional methods When compared to the traditional methods of heat, chemical and mechanical alteration used to modify materials, radiation processing can offer significant advantages.
While these traditional methods may be effective, they can be limited by a number of constraints—shortcomings that may be overcome by radiation processing. Among the benefits of radiation processing are:
- more efficient use of energy
- more efficient use of effort
- reduction or elimination of chemical residues
- more closely controlled process
